Case 1047

1. Application to Waifs and Strays' Society 2 June 1887

View the Case Summary.

B is in a position of great danger - she was wandering about the street all day - no one to look after her - The father constantly in drink - She is now in the Workhouse with her father - After a time of drinking, he goes in to the Workhouse, but comes out again & goes on with the same wandering, drinking life.

I was told, that she dances at the Public House where her sister is servant - That Public House is a very undesirable place for a young girl.

Before her mother's death (3 years ago) they had a decent home and the girl went to the day school at Oulton a village near Lowestoft - where her father had work. The mother died of an internal abscess - Her eldest step sister W. an illegitimate daughter of her mother's is a very respectable woman & took in the girl & her father, for a time, but could not continue to keep them. She has only what her Husband earns, for themselves; & he is getting elderly and the girl has no claim on her - I think B. would be fit in a place after a little training - If she could be removed from all the bad associations of Lowestoft there wd. be more hope for her. I am told, she has not gone wrong, though exposed to so much evil - She was baptized quite recently by the Revd. R F. Cory in Gulton Workhouse
