Case 10

1. Application to Waifs and Strays' Society 24 February 1882

View the Case Summary.

I beg to certify that I have known the family for about 18 months. They are most respectable people. The man by his steadiness & perseverance had worked himself up till he held a responsible position, but in the think day of Wednesday Jan. 25 he feel between two barges & was drowned. He had saved a little money of late years. But with such a heavy family it is fast going. A subscription is being [setup] for him with which it is hoped to start the widow in business, or in some way settle her to earn her livings & should the Committee decide to take the two children, [W.] will still have four to support. The girl M. we are sending to Bath in the hopes that she may recover & be able to earn her own living.

The boy, aged 7, I should have applied for, but that he is not very bright, though hardly is he called an idiot.

I shall be very glad to give any further particulars that may be desired.

D.
