Case 9649

1. Application to Waifs and Strays' Society 23 May 1903

View the Case Summary.

The little girl I am anxious to get into your home - is child of Mr & Mrs. -- Mr. & Mrs. -- have lived in S. George's Parish for about 5 years. They lived with Mrs. -- & Mr. mother -- Mr. -- took to drinking, & ill treated his wife. He was sent to prison for his ill treatment, but after leaving prison was much worse than before in this respect & at last Mrs. obtained a separation order, & the Magistrates gave her the guardianship of the two children, Mr. being ordered to pay 12s per week this separation took place last October & from that time Mr. has never paid one penny towards his wife's maintenance. He has been imprisoned for it several times with no effect. He has now disappeared altogether. As long as Mrs. -- (the old mother) was alive Mrs. could leave the children under her care, & go out to work. Since the death of Mrs. -- a month ago, Mrs. -- is unable to work, as she cannot leave the children (the boy of 2 years old & girl of 3 years) none of her relations can help her being poor themselves. If Mrs. -- could earn enough to keep herself & the one child left to her.
