Dear Miss Stancliffe,
re L

With reference to your letter of the 16th, inst., I have made enquiries and I much regret that the proposal as regards her future does not seem to be a practical one. You are probably aware that the Society's operations are confined to children and when a girl reaches a certain age she can no longer remain under our care. As a general rule we are successful in training them to earn their own livelihood, but unfortunately owing to either physical, mental, or moral incapacity, it sometimes happens that a child must be returned to those interested in order that they may make other arrangements for his or her future. It is always to me a matter of sincere regret when it is necessary for the Society to take the extreme step of discharging any case but you will easily see that in some instances there is no alternative. Experience has proved that it is absolutely necessary
