Description:

In a thick fog in January 1882 M's father, a lighterman (a boatman), fell between two barges and drowned. There were seven children and their mother could not afford to look after them all. M. went into the Dulwich Home in February 1882. In May 1882 she was boarded out with a family in Dunstable. In April 1886 M. stole money and other items and was sent to the Industrial Home at Fareham. In April 1888 she went into service.
