E's father was a compositor with a print firm. He died in 1880. E's mother, a charwoman, was an alcoholic. The six children were poorly fed and clothed. Their mother pawned clothing that was given to them. E. went into the Clapton Home in August 1882. In 1887 he was taken on as an apprentice carpenter. The apprenticeship indenture document describing the conditions of the apprenticeship, wages, etc. is on the file.
