A's mother deserted her family about 1880. A's father, a costermonger, was out at work all day and could not look after her. They lived in a rough part of Marylebone in London. A. went into the Sloane Street Industrial School for Girls in July 1883. This home was not run by the Waifs and Strays' Society. A. transferred to the Dulwich Home in February 1885 and to the Fareham Home in Hampshire in October 1885.
